Providing homes for the people who power our economy

We aim to provide housing to low-income households and those who can’t afford market-rate housing but earn too much to qualify for affordable housing. These are the people who power our economy: teachers, firefighters, service workers, and many others who are rent-burdened and increasingly displaced from Seattle.

Meet Seattle’s new social housing developer

Seattle Social Housing (SSH) is a new, innovative public development authority created through the passage of I-135 in 2023. Our mission is to develop, own, lease, and maintain mixed-income housing that is permanently affordable, owned as a public asset forever, and designed for people priced out of market-rate housing.

We’re building momentum! As we make progress in the coming months, we hope you’ll follow our journey.

Civic Leadership Briefing

For the last few months, we've been sharing details of our mandate, vision, and progress with civic leaders from across the Seattle area. Watch this recording of our presentation to the Housing Development Consortium to hear some of what we've been discussing.

RFI | Pipeline Opportunities

We've released a request for information to start developing a pipeline of potential project. We're seeking to identify existing properties that could be acquired by SSHD as well as shovel-ready or entitled multifamily projects that face financing gaps in today’s high-interest rate environment.

Public meetings

We are a public development authority, and our monthly board meetings are open to the public. SSH’s board of directors meets every third Thursday via Webex. Minutes of these meetings are posted once approved and a link to agendas can be found on the meetings page.
